Linda Edna's parents are businessmen Wayne David Cardellini and Lorraine (Hernan). She was born at Redwood City in California. She is of Italian (from her paternal great-grandfather), Irish (from her mother), German, English, and Scottish origins. She trained as an actor in the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and made her debut in the British TV show Just William (2010). After her character as Lady Rose MacClare in the period drama series Downton Abbey (2012-2015), her first big break came in her role as the lead in the film of fantasy Cinderella (2015). James was then cast as Countess Natasha Rostova on the TV version of War & Peace in 2016. James has appeared in numerous films such as Baby Driver (2017) and period dramas Darkest Hour (2017) and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society 2018 and The Dig 2021, as in the musicals Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018) and Yesterday (2019). Her performance as Pamela Anderson in the biographical series Pam & Tommy (2022) earned her nominations for the Golden Globe and a Primetime Emmy Award.
